Major General Martin is a native of Holyoke, Massachusetts. He graduated from UMASS/Amherst with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and was commissioned in 1990 through the Platoon Leader’s Course and served 8 years active duty before transitioning to the Marine Corps Reserve. Major General Martin is a career Infantry Officer and has served in both infantry and light armored reconnaissance units, and has held command at the company, battalion, regiment and division levels. As a company grade officer with 1st Bn, 6th Marines he served as a Platoon Commander and deployed with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) in support of Operation Provide Promise. As a field grade officer, he commanded 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2009/10. As a Colonel he served as Deputy Commander, 25th Marine Regiment; as well as Marine Detachment Commander, Joint Enabling Capabilities Command, USTRANSCOM.

Major General Martin’s staff assignments include: Recruitment Advertising Officer, 1st Marine Corps District; Operations Officer, RS New York; Training Officer, MASS-6; Ground Watch Officer, I MEF, Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003; Readiness Officer, 4th Marine Division; Assistant Operations Officer, 25th Marines; ACS/G3/5/7 IMA Det MarForCom.

Major General Martin served as commander of 4th Marine Division from September 2018 to October 2020. While continuing to command 4th Marine Division, he served as commander, Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North from May 2019 through September 2019.Also, since June 2022, he has been a Board Member of the Reserve Forces Policy Board, which serves as an independent advisor to Secretary of Defense on Reserve and National Guard matters.

Major General Martin is a graduate of the Command and Staff Distance Education course. He received his Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College and completed AJPME at the Joint Forces Staff College.

Major General Martin is a Managing Partner and Co-Founder of Paladin Wealth Partners, a private wealth management firm in Springfield, MA.
