Brigadier General John B. Hashem, USAR - Board Member (Nominated)

Brigadier General John B. Hashem assumed duties as the Deputy Director J5, Strategy, Engagement and Programs, United States Africa Command on October 13, 2018. He most recently served as the DCG-Support and Director Army Reserve Engagement Cell, United States Army North (Fifth Army), and before that as the Special Assistant to the Chief of Army Reserve, Washington DC.

Brigadier General Hashem enlisted in the Army Reserve in February in 1984, was commissioned a Lieutenant in 1986 and served on Active Duty from 1988-1993 as an Infantry Officer. He is a 1988 graduate of the University of Scranton with a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering and Business, Math minor. He holds a certification in Homeland Security from the University of Colorado, a Master of Science in International Relations from Troy University, and a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College. Brigadier General Hashem's military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Civil Affairs Officer Advanced Course, Psychological Operations Officer Qualification Course, The Basic Strategic Arts Program, Defense Strategy Course, Joint Task Force Commander Course, Joint Senior Reserve Officer Course, and the Senior Force Integrators Course.

Brigadier General Hashem served in active and reserve (Troop Program Unit and Active Guard-Reserve) command and staff assignments with the 98th Division (Training), NY; 2nd Infantry Division, Korea; 101st Airborne Division (AASLT), Ft. Campbell, KY; the United States Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command, MN and MD; and Office, Chief of Army Reserve, Washington DC. He served two tours in Iraq. In 1990-1991 he was an Anti-Armor Platoon Leader during Desert Shield/Storm, 1/187th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (AASLT). In 2007-2008 he was the Commander, Psychological Operations Task Force-Iraq, Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Brigadier General Hashem served as a strategist/ joint planner in the USNORTHCOM J5 from 2002-2004. From 2004-2006 he served as the Deputy J5 for Joint Force Headquarters-National Capitol Region. From 2010-2013 he served as the Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas' Security Affairs.

Brigadier General Hashem's awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Office of the Secretary of Defense Staff Badge, and the Army Staff Badge.

Brigadier General Hashem is married to Deborah and has two children, Ian and Leila.
