Captain Steve Knight is a native of San Diego, California and started his career by enlisting in the Navy's Nuclear Power Program in 1984. In 1986, he was selected for the Broadened Opportunity For Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) Program. Upon Graduation from BOOST, he received a NROTC schola rship to the University of San Diego. Upon college graduation in 1991, Captain Knight received fixed wing and rotary wing flight training culminating in his designation as a Naval Aviator in August 1993. He then received Fleet Replacement Pilot training in the CH-46D at Helicopter Combat Support Squadron (HC) THREE at NAS North Island and was sent to his first sea duty assignment with the Gunbearers of HC-11 where he served as the Assistant Administrative and NATOPS Officer. While attached to HC-11, he completed two separate deployments onboard USS NEW ORLEANS (LPH-11) and USS RAINIER (AOE-7).
Captain Knight's next assignment was on the OPNAV Staff in Washington DC working as an Action Officer for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Logistics (N47). In 1998, he was accepted into the Full-Time Support Officer program and was assigned to NAF Washington where he served as the Assistant Reserve Program Director.
Captain Knight was then assigned to Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) Five Five at NAS Point Mugu, California flying the C-130T aircraft where he held the Operations and Maintenance Department Head positions. He completed multiple detachments ISO OPERATIONS IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.
Captain Knight departed VR-55 to assume the duties as Operations Officer for Captain , Fleet Logistics Support Wing (CFLSW) located in Fort Worth, Texas where he had fiduciary and operational oversight for 53 aircraft, 15 squadrons and three permanent detachment sites.
In 2005, Captain Knight was selected to be the Officer-in-Charge of VR-61, the Islanders, at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. While awaiting his Command tour, Captain Knight was transferred to the Navy Air Logistics Office (NALO) in New Orleans to be the Executive Officer. He transferred from NALO and assumed command of VR-46, “the Eagles,” in August 2009. Upon completion of his command tour in December 2010, he reported to OSD as the Senior Navy Reserve Policy Advisor to the Reserve Forces Policy Board.
Captain Knight's personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Air Medal (Individual award), Navy Commendation Medal (six awards) and other campaign and unit awards. He is the recipient of the 1997 Naval Helicopter Association Pilot of the Year Award and the 2003 Naval Reserve Association Full-Time Support Officer of the Year Award.
Captain Knight has flown over 4,000 flight hours in the T-34, TH-57,H-46D, C-12B, C-130T, C-40A, and C-9B aircraft.
