Major Timothy R. Newkirk enlisted in the United States Marines Corps Reserve in August 1997 and after his initial active duty training obligation began drilling with Co E, 2d Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment as a Rifleman. Major Newkirk’s subsequent enlisted assignments included service as a Motor Transport Operator with 6th Motor Transport Battalion and Co B, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) Battalion; as well as an Air Support Operations Operator with Marine Air Support Squadron-6 (MASS-6).
In June 2004, then-Sergeant Newkirk was mobilized and deployed to Iraq with MASS-6 in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. During deployment, Sergeant Newkirk was selected for the Reserve Enlisted Commissioning Program (RECP) and attended Officer Candidate School upon return from deployment. Subsequently commissioned a Second Lieutenant in March 2005, Lieutenant Newkirk then completed the Basic Officer Course, the Infantry Officer Course, and the Light Armored Reconnaissance Leaders Course before joining Co B, 4th LAR Battalion as a Platoon Commander in Mar 2006. In June 2006, Lieutenant Newkirk was mobilized with Co B, 4th LAR and deployed to Haditha, Iraq in October 2007 as a Provisional Small Craft Company. Following redeployment and demobilization, Lieutenant Newkirk assumed duties as the Company Executive Officer. In June 2009, Co B was again mobilized and then-Captain Newkirk, serving as the Company Executive Officer, deployed with 4th LAR Battalion to Helmand Province, Afghanistan thru to May 2010 in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Following deployment, Captain Newkirk reported to Quantico, VA and attended the Expeditionary Warfare School as a resident student.
In June 2011, Captain Newkirk returned to the Selected Marine Corps Reserve and served as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) with the 4th Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (4th ANGLICO) in West Palm Beach, FL. In September 2012, Captain Newkirk returned to 4th LAR Battalion and assumed duties as the Company Commander, Company B, 4th LAR Bn. In September 2014, Captain Newkirk relinquished command of Co B and joined the 4th LAR Battalion Staff as the Assistant Operations Officer. In July 2015, Major Newkirk reported to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and attended the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College as a resident student. Following graduation in June 2016, Major Newkirk joined 3d Battalion, 25th Marines for assignment as the Battalion Operations Officer and in Sep 2018, assumed his present duties as the Battalion Executive Officer.
Major Newkirk’s personal decorations include the Air Medal (with Strike/Flight numeral “5”), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (w/ Gold Star), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with 2 Gold Stars and Combat “V”), and the Combat Action Ribbon. Major Newkirk’s education includes a Master of Arts in Diplomacy from Norwich University, a Master of Military Art and Science in History from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Major Newkirk was a member of the Marine Corps Reserve Policy Board from 2016 to 2018. In the civilian sector, Major Newkirk is a 757/767 Pilot for United Airlines and currently resides in Alexandria, VA with his fiancé, Jessica and their dog, Ramie.
